Walfang: Weckruf an die EU! |
 Die WDCS fordert die Europäische Union (EU) auf, sämtliche Versuche innerhalb der Internationalen Walfangkommission (IWC) strikt abzulehnen, neue Walfangkategorien zu schaffen. Die Walfangstaaten, Island, Japan und Norwegen dürfen für deren Ignoranz gegenüber internationalen Verträgen und Beschlüssen nicht auch noch belohnt werden.

Dear Commissioner Dimas,

WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, is calling on the European Union clarify its position with respect to commercial whaling and the forthcoming IWC discussions on a potential ‘deal’ that may well see the resumption of commercial whaling.
The current position of the European Council of Ministers can be interpreted to suggest that the EU would accept a resumption of commercial whaling in exchange for an ending, or even simply a reduction, of scientific whaling. We do not believe that this represents the views of the European Union’s citizens.
We are calling on the Commission to acknowledge that the proposed deal cannot guarantee the long-term conservation of whales by bringing all whaling back under the control of the IWC. The deal is fundamentally flawed in that it does not even seek to address whaling by Norway and Iceland.
The real danger of the deal being considered is that it implies that coastal whaling is the lesser of two evils, but if adopted, it would lift the ban on commercial whaling and open the floodgates for other countries to restart or expand their own whaling.
The EU must represent the democratic and majority view of the people of the EU who fundamentally oppose commercial whaling and would hold the EU responsible for any collusion that results in a resumption of any form of commercial whaling.
Whaling has long proven itself to be unsustainable, unviable and impossible to regulate. We call on the Commission to state its belief that no deal is possible and that no form of commercial whaling should ever be endorsed.
